Things to do in Butterfly Valley Turkey

About Butterfly Valley

Magnificent limestone cliffs, verdant rolling hills, cascading waterfalls, vibrant flowers, and the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea flank the Butterfly Valley. The charming setting looks straight out of a picture postcard, and you will feel like you have escaped to your own wonderland. It got its name from the hundreds of species of colorful butterflies fluttering around in this area. In the Turkish language, Butterfly Valley is called Kelebekler Vadisi. The valley was declared a nature reserve in 1987, which helped in preserving the natural beauty of the valley and keeping these winged creatures safe.

How To Visit Butterfly Valley?

Butterfly Valley is easily accessible from Istanbul and Antalya via Fethiye. You can travel by flight or bus from Istanbul to Fethiye. More than 20 buses operate daily, and the journey takes around 10-12 hours. You can travel by bus from Antalya to Fethiye, which takes around 1.5 hours.

Butterfly Valley is almost cut off from the rest of the country, and the only way to reach there is by foot or boat. Unfortunately, walking by foot to the valley is not advisable as it is a treacherous path through steep cliffs and unstable terrain. So, the best way to reach Butterfly Valley is to take a minibus from Fethiye to Oludeniz, and then book a boat ride to the destination.

Best Time to Visit Butterfly Valley

The peak seasons of Turquoise Coast and the Butterfly Valley are from June to August. The climate will be sweltering during these summer months, but the water will be cool. However, it is not a great time to visit during this season due to the large influx of tourists and high hotel tariffs. It will also be tiring to explore the valley and spend time outdoors due to the warm weather.

The shoulder season is in April-May and September-October and is a great time to see the butterflies.

Things to do in Butterfly Valley, Turkey

Butterfly Valley is the perfect place to cut off from the world, switch off all the electronic gadgets and explore the picturesque vistas. Here are the best things to do and see in Butterfly Park:

Laze on the beach

Find a quiet spot, spread a towel, and laze around in the abundant natural beauty of this place. Soak up the warm sunshine, read a book, or watch the waves hitting the shore. Spending time on the beach in this tranquil place is one of the free things to do in Turkey.

See the waterfall

There is a large waterfall at the end of the valley, flowing down from Faralya Village. Though ropes and metal pegs are in place to assist you in climbing slippery rocks, it is best to hire a local guide and wear safety gear while visiting the waterfall.

Enjoy snacks and drinks

Since this is a nature reserve, no permanent buildings are permitted here. There is a small shop selling gifts and a cafe serving tourists food and beverages. The shop is a fantastic place to pick up a few souvenirs to carry back for your loved ones. You can relax on the beach and sample some freshly cooked local food while feasting your eyes on the gorgeous views.

Look for butterflies

Due to the increasing number of visitors and noise pollution, the swarm of butterflies has decreased in the valley. However, you can still spot various species of butterflies in the back of the valley. This valley is also home to the orange and white Jersey Tiger moth, a native insect. You can find them in the butterfly cave, close to the waterfall at the rear side of the valley.

Go for a swim

During peak season, you can find a dive shop on one side of the beach. You can rent gear and go snorkeling or scuba diving in the bay's crystal-clear waters. But if you visit in the off-season, you can swim in these beautiful waters and unwind in the natural surroundings.

Enjoy a peaceful night

During the day, several boats bring tourists to the bay on day trips, often playing loud music. But in the evening, as the sun sets on the horizon, the valley converts into an idyllic beach cove heaven. It is an excellent idea to bring your tents and pitch them on the beach for a small price. Alternatively, you can rent a tent or stay in one of the charming wooden cabins. These come with minimal amenities and shared restrooms. They don't have electricity or wifi, and offer a perfect place to detach from the outside world and connect with nature.

Conclusion

Butterfly Valley is a heaven for nature lovers and an ideal place to escape the hustle-bustle of the cities. So, apply for your Turkey visa soon and enjoy an unforgettable time here.
